The best time to start laser hair removal in Melbourne is winter. Laser is a course spread over several months, and it works best and most safely on skin that has not seen much sun — so starting in the cooler months lets you get the bulk of your sessions done on untanned skin and be well into results by summer. Plenty of clients plan to book in spring to be ready for summer, then find the timing does not work that way. Here is why winter removes most of the friction.
Laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle, and only works on hairs in their active growth phase — and only a portion are in that phase at once, which is why one session cannot treat everything. Sessions sit around four to six weeks apart, and most clients need six or more before they see a meaningful reduction, depending on the area, hair colour and hormones.
Be realistic: laser reduces growth, so regrowth becomes finer, lighter and slower, with occasional maintenance common. It is not guaranteed permanent removal. Because a course spans several months, when you start decides when you finish — and counting back from summer lands you in winter.
The laser reads the contrast between your hair pigment and your skin tone. A tan reduces that contrast, so treatment moves to more conservative settings and the risk of irritation or temporary pigmentation changes goes up. That is why clinics ask you to avoid significant sun before each session and protect the treated skin afterwards, when it is more sensitive than usual.
Across a Melbourne summer — high UV, beaches, outdoor events — staying consistently protected between sessions takes real discipline. In winter it happens by default: you are covered up, UV is at its lowest, and your skin holds its natural base tone from one session to the next. Fake tan counts too — self-tanners interfere the same way, so treated areas must be product-free before each session, which is rarely an issue in winter.

Because sessions sit four to six weeks apart, a winter start compounds. As a rough guide only:
When you start Sessions completed by early December
May Around 5 to 6
June Around 4 to 5
July Around 4
August Around 3 to 4
Most clients notice regrowth coming through slower and finer within the first few sessions, so even a mid-winter start usually shows a visible difference by warmer weather. Some areas need further sessions into the new year, but the bulk of the work is done while it is cold.
Before your first session, you have a consultation: we assess your skin tone, hair colour and target areas, review your medical history and medications, and patch test where appropriate. Avoid waxing, plucking or epilating beforehand — the laser needs the follicle intact — but shaving is fine and usually required just before your session.
During the appointment, we use the Soprano Ice by Alma Lasers at our Hawksburn studio. It delivers energy gradually with a sweeping, cooled applicator rather than sharp single pulses, so most clients feel warmth rather than a sting. Small areas are often finished in under half an hour.
Between sessions, treated skin stays sensitive, so keep it protected with SPF even on cloudy days, skip hot showers, saunas and vigorous exercise briefly, and shave rather than wax or pluck so the follicles stay treatable.
Laser works best where there is contrast between hair and skin, and dark hair responds most predictably. Very light blonde, grey and red hairs contain little pigment and respond poorly — we will tell you honestly if waxing or electrolysis would suit you better. Pregnancy, certain medications and some skin conditions can also affect whether treatment is right for you now, which is exactly what the consultation is for — and why we never quote a fixed number of sessions before seeing your skin and hair.
Cost depends mostly on the size of the area and how many sessions you need. Small areas like the upper lip or underarms cost less per session than larger ones like full legs or the back, and buying a course or combining areas usually works out better value than paying one session at a time. We give exact pricing after your consultation rather than a generic figure.

At Lotik Beauty Studio, founded by Raha Golpa, a consultation is how we match the treatment to your skin tone, hair type and lifestyle before you commit. Laser hair removal is available at our Hawksburn studio, alongside our full range across Hawksburn and Malvern Central. Booking in the next few weeks gives your course the longest run through the cooler months.
